Social Media Break

You might have noticed that for the past week or so I have been a little bit absent on my social media accounts. Probably the main reason for this is because I'm back at uni and have been a bit bogged under with work, but also I've been trying to use social media less.

I'm usually the kind of person who'll spend hours trawling through twitter or Instagram and then hate myself for wasting so much time. I'm constantly glued to my phone. I've wanted to use social media less for a while, but have never really found the motivation to do so.

I think the change came last week when Trump announced his Muslim Ban. I tend to get so scared when frightening things like that happen, and having to be reminded of it in every other tweet was just exhausting. Don't get me wrong, I obviously care deeply about the horrible things going on around the world at the moment, but it's all too easy to get bogged down in the negative and let it take over your thoughts. There is definitely a line between staying informed about politics, and letting it completely stress you out, and I had crossed that line for sure.

I deleted Twitter and Facebook off my phone and immediately felt such a huge sense of relief. I no longer felt compelled to check them every other minute, and my stress levels slowly returned to normal(ish). It definitely made me realise that life does go on outside of these things, and that something going on in America is not the be all and end all for me in Fife.

I did feel a bit selfish, focusing on myself rather than surrounding myself with social issues like I see people on my feeds doing, but sometimes you have to be selfish to retain your sanity!!

When a lot of people think about deleting social media, there's this fear of being out of the loop or missing out on things going on with friends. however, when I went to look at twitter on my laptop I realised that actually nothing had happened and found myself feeling a bit underwhelmed. I think there is this FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out mentality, but in reality the 'drama' will wait a few hours.

I think everyone should have a bit of a break from social media every now and then. It's good to reconnect with things that aren't online and to remind yourself that life does go on.
