What I Wish I'd Known: Maths in Germany

Hi, I'm Habibe. Currently I study mathematics in Germany, NRW, for a Bachelor degree. It is really tough and I've been doing it for years now. I chose maths cause it was my favourite subject in school- I'm proud to say that I really love maths! Be sure that your chosen subject is really something you want to do for your whole life. Don't choose maths just to gain a good job or you think maths is just calculating. If you think so than I must tell you that you are wrong!

One important thing that I wish I had known before starting is: You will miss the numbers! In the lectures you will learn why you can calculate something in a way you learned in school. So the question is WHY not HOW! For example, they already know that you can calculate the roots in a polynomial, but they want the proof why you can solve the problem with the quadratic formula and so on... There will be a lot of theory and proof. Maths is really tough and you must take your time to learn it.

Here is some advice:

1. Start learning from day one

2.Revise your notes after every lecture or at the end of the day and try to understand it. I always made a short summary for every lecture in an extra notebook.

3.Write down your questions if there is something you haven't understand.

4. Don't hesitate to ask the lecturer or other students for help- these questions will multiply. It is better to have your answers before the next lecture (of the same subject) starts, it increases your understanding and focus on it.

5. And last but not least: Don't lose courage! This is not just for maths students, there will be a time when you believe that you can't manage it, but this will fade away, so keep going.

I hope I haven't scared you cause even if it's tough, it is really fun, too. There are so many cool things to learn and at the end you will understand Sheldon's calculations in The Big Bang Theory and so on 😂 !
I'm proud to be a math student, I really like going to University, I've met a lot of friends there. So you won't regret it! 😊
